Mid Century Modern 1970s Lucite Armchairs after a model of Gerald Summers

Modern Antics is excited to be offering a pair of these extremely rare 1970s Lucite armchairs. This transparent, almost weightless, plexiglass lounge chair is an updated version of the British designer Gerald Summers classic steam- bent plywood chair of 1934 that brought him to prominence.

They blend so well in any home due to their transparent nature and timeless design. They are a true masterpiece and a real treasure to add to someones home. They are super versatile and could be utilised outdoors during the summer months owing to their durable material. They are in great vintage condition.

The original 1934 plywood chair designed in 1934 by Gerald Summers was manufactured by his London company, The Makers of Simple Furniture, the chair is made from a plywood sheet consisting of 13 layers of cross-grained veneer. The sheet is cut with four straight lines, then pressed in a wooden mould for eight hours. Summers made furniture with his wife Marjorie from 1929. He embraced the new contemporary style and materials like plywood and pushed their boundaries. As the V&A Museum notes of the chair – its construction from a single piece of ply gave it a “highly distinctive visual and structural clarity” and also meant no wastage.
